“I remember we celebrated our first Christmas in the house with my older sister who had just arrived from Guadalajara. We all slept on the floor and shared gifts, but the biggest gift was obviously the house. I felt the house was really beautiful…a decent home, unlike many in the area that didn’t even had a roof. What is more having a house that somebody else had built for you is like having their love and good wishes staying with you all the time. You can feel it. And that motivated me. People spend their money, time, vacation time to pour their love building that house. I will always, always remember the day we were given the house.” Denisse Vega
Since joining Amor, it has been more than evident that the life changing potential of receiving a home goes beyond what we are able to perceived. When I interview families who have received a home I can see the immediate impact from a physical standpoint. They’ll testify on the improvement of their lives, in safety, health, and comfort. But listening to Denisse’s story and how the experience impacted her a decade later and how it helped to shape her into adulthood is truly inspiring and one of the reasons why at Amor we keep doing what we do.
